The Gloucester Township community came together on June 18 to honor fallen officer Christopher M. L. Reese, whose life was cut short on the job in February.

The tribute included a ceremony where the township unveiled a Town Hero Banner in his memory. The event drew township officials, law enforcement and local residents who gathered not only to mourn, but to celebrate the officers life and legacy.

“Officer Reese exemplified what it means to serve with honor,” said Mayor David Mayer. “His bravery and commitment to protecting others will never be forgotten. Today, we recognize him not only as a fallen officer, but as a son of Gloucester Township whose legacy will live on.”

“Chris made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty,” noted Police Chief David Harkins of Reese, an area native. “His courage is a reflection of the very best in law enforcement. We are proud to call him one of our own.”

The unveiling and ceremony included family and friends of Reese, who shared memories of his dedication, strength and compassion. They described him as someone who was always willing to help others, both on and off duty.

Reese was just 30 years old when he was fatally shot on Feb. 21 during a routine traffic stop as a member of the Virginia Beach police. Alongside his partner, Cameron Girvin, Reese was conducting the stop when a suspect with expired tags opened fire, striking both officers twice before fleeing the scene. Reese and Garvin later succumbed to their injuries.

Prior to joining the Virginia Beach department, Reese also served in the town’s sheriff’s office for three years. He was known for his professionalism, loyalty and commitment to duty.
