Local residents of Winslow Township gathered for an evening of creativity called Painting in the Park in a lot at New Brooklyn Park on June 24.
Tables were set up throughout the parking lot with provided canvases and art supplies. The young and the young at heart participated in the family-friendly event – one in a series – where some attendees demonstrated skillful painting and others spent their time in what was described as a relaxing environment.
The event was an opportunity for participants to try something new creatively. Many of the watercolor paintings featured flowers, animals and sunsets depicted in an array of vibrant colors.
Mayor Marie D. Lawrence greeted residents beneath a large white canopy tent.
“We’ve been doing this for four years,” she said. “The community comes out, and they have a nice, relaxing evening painting, mixing and mingling with each other while making new friends.”
Police Capt. Cary Robinson shared the mayor’s sentiments.
“It’s absolutely beautiful and brings the community together,” he enthused. “It’s a very good time. I encourage everyone to come out, join in, and see what their painting skills are like.”
Kirsten Spady came to Painting in the Park with family members to experience a summer activity.
“I find that Painting in the Park is really great,” she noted. “We actually have our grandchildren with us today, and we’re having a ball. Everyone is so nice and helpful, and it really is a joyous day here at the park.”
Lawrence addressed the attendees with a message of unity as they listened to music while painting and chatting with family and friends at the tables. A photographer captured the scene.
The Painting in the Park series will continue on Wednesday, July 8, at the West Atco Civic Association Center, and on Wednesday, July 22, at Frank Donio Memorial Park. Hours for both are 6 to 7:30 p.m.
The events are funded by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.
