The Marlton Senior Citizen Club’s book sale on Aug. 6 was a great success, so now the club is looking to see its membership thrive and grow.
“I couldn’t believe the amount of people,” said club member Elaine Nelson of those in attendance. “We had 12 tables of books and people were just loving the books. We had every book you could think of, from children’s books to science fiction to ‘how to’ books, history books, nonfiction, fiction… It was pretty much every book you could think of.”
The club made around $400 from their first book sale. It was originally going to be just a swap between members, but they decided to open it up to the public. So many books were donated to the sale that the club has plenty left over, so they’re looking to have another one. To see so many people come out for the event was both shocking and surprising, Nelson said, but it was great that the community came out for it and it brought more awareness to the club.
“That’s what we were hoping for,” Nelson said, “It was very nice to see the community step up and help.”
The club is open to anyone who’s looking to make new friends and reconnect with past acquaintances. Members typically go on trips to places like local wineries, and they attend luncheons, holiday-themed parties and events, and play games like bocce ball and cornhole. Meetings are held on the first and third Thursday of each month at the Gibson House. On meeting days, the group gathers at 10:30 a.m. for coffee and doughnuts before the main meeting begins at 11. Members do not have to be Evesham residents. Nelson and her husband Raymond, who’s also club president, were initially unsure if the club would be a good fit for them when they joined years ago, but after attending a few meetings they changed their mind. She advises potential new members to do the same.
“We’re here for people, and we’re hoping that they see the need for the club and that people would want to join,” Nelson said. “It brings community to the community. Come and see us and keep coming back. That’s the important thing.”
