Every year, the Authority hosts three Household Hazardous Waste  and Document Shredding events, allowing Cumberland County residents to safely dispose of household hazardous waste and shred personal documents, free of charge. A total of 696 Cumberland County vehicles attended the most recdent event, with participating attendees from all 14 Cumberland County municipalities.

As a result of the event, 7.52 tons (15,040 pounds) of hazardous waste were properly disposed. In addition, 800 gallons of used oil were collected, and 7.49 tons (14,980 pounds) of paper were shredded and recycled during the September event. A total of 3.36 tons (6,720 pounds) of electronic waste were collected for recycling.

Throughout 2026, The Authority’s Household Hazardous Waste and Document Shredding events serviced 1,983 vehicles, resulting in the proper disposal of 21.31 tons (42,620 pounds) of hazardous waste, 2,630 gallons of used oil, 9.28 tons (18,560 pounds) of electronic waste, and the shredding and recycling of 21.94 tons (43,880 pounds) of personal documents.

To facilitate collections between events, residents can dispose of electronic waste and used motor oil at their municipal drop off center and participating auto parts stores. For more information, visit theauthoritynj.com/recycling-dropoff/.

Freon, CFCs/refrigerators, air conditioners, coolers, tires, concrete, and wood are not accepted at Household Hazardous Waste events. Residents can properly dispose of them at the Solid Waste Complex for a fee, during normal business hours. Latex paint, which is water-based and non-hazardous, is not accepted. To properly dispose of latex paint, mix paint with clay-based kitty litter or Speedy Dry so the can is three-fourths full. Allow the paint/kitty litter or Speedy Dry mixture to congeal until it is no longer pourable. Replace the lid and dispose of the paint can with household trash.
