Every year Cinnaminson students get a chance to learn how local government works by touring the municipal building and taking roles as the mayor, deputy mayor, administrator and Township Committee members during a township meeting.

On Monday, Oct. 19, members of the Cinnaminson Middle School Student Council started their day participating in the annual Youth in Government program by taking a tour of the municipal building, the police department and administrative offices.

Later that evening they took over the regularly scheduled Township Committee meeting and got a first-hand look at how municipal government works.

“This Township Committee meeting is one of our favorite nights of the year. At our annual Youth in Government meeting, we welcomed eighth graders from Cinnaminson Middle School’s Student Council, who stepped into the roles of Township Committee Members and ran the evening’s meeting, after a day of learning about local government,” the Township Committee stated on Facebook.

“We love seeing the next generation of leaders get involved in their community. As our students learned, local government impacts many aspects of our daily lives. Kudos to those recognized during the meeting for their hard work, and thank you to everyone in our community who looks out for one another, supports those in need and helps keep our roadways safe.”

The Youth in Government program is a collaborative effort between the Township Committee and the Cinnaminson School District which aims to teach students about civic engagement and public service to the community at a young age.

During the meeting, the students and government officials presented a proclamation to Cinna-Mission honoring its outstanding volunteer service and compassionate food assistance efforts.

Next they honored the Cinnaminson Township Police Department for achieving accreditation through the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police (NJSACOP) Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission, after months of hard work.

Also, Remington & Vernick Engineers, represented by Joseph Barbadoro, was recognized for receiving an award from the New Jersey Society of Municipal Engineers for work completed for the Township.

The students learned a lot about local government during Cinnaminson’s annual Youth in Government program – which every year encourages young people to become involved in the community.
