The Harrison Township Environmental Commission is partnering with the Mullica Hill library to host an Earth Day event at the latter on Wednesday, April 22, from 4 to 5:30 p.m.
The event stems from the commission’s efforts to educate kids and their families about the importance of environmental care.
“We want to get families involved,” said Dominic Spaventa, a commission board member. “Our intention is to get kids ages 5 to 12 involved, plant zinnia seeds, hand out bookmarks and help make a beehouse.”
Education on bees and how they help pollinate will be a major topic at the Earth Day event, specifically how bees store their pollen in the early stages of spring, which then helps cultivate plants for summer.
“It’s the beginning of spring,” Spaventa explained. “I hope they (participants) learn about bees and plants and understand how important they each are to the environment.”
A story about Earth Day will be read to kids by librarians and activities are planned on the topic. Participants will also get a look at the Gloucester County Library System’s (GCLS) seed library for plants local to the region. Zinnia seeds will be handed out to kids so they can plant them at home.
The Earth Day event is free, but registration is required in advance on the GCLS website.
The event is one of many the commission is hosting for spring, including a township shred event on Saturday, May 2, at the Harrison municipal building from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The library is also holding a spring gardening with annuals event on Monday, May 4, at 7 p.m.
“We hope the library brings us back in the future,” Spaventa noted, “and continues this program for years to come.”
