As temperatures drop, the township is urging people to remember that all animals should be brought inside during extreme cold weather.
According to a Monroe Township ordinance, no animal can be kept outdoors for more than four consecutive hours when the temperature is 32 degrees F or below. Animals must also have proper shelter, food and water, and must never be subjected to unnecessary suffering or exposure.
“Cold weather can be life-threatening for pets,” the township warned on social media. “If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them.”
Along with bringing animals indoors, ensure they have a warm, safe shelter; check on elderly neighbors’ pets; and report concerns if an animal is left out in dangerous conditions.
“Let’s work together to keep all animals safe this winter,” the township said online.
