Deputy Mayor John Legge joined Boy Scout Owen Young at his Eagle Scout Court of Honor on Oct. 12.
An Eagle Scout Court of Honor was held for Owen Young at VFW Post 7679 on Oct. 12, when the township resident earned his Eagle rank and received a proclamation for his work in the community.
Young earned the Boy Scouts’ highest honor after completing his required service project, working with a group of other Scouts to improve the trails at Mantua’s Ceres Park last November.
“Owen created a new map of the park with the trails defined by color and installed a new sign post at the park entrance,” said Young’s father, Stephen. “The sign includes the new map and a QR code of the map, which is posted on the Mantua Township website park page. This will allow hikers to download the map to their phones before they enter the park and the trails.
“Owen and the Scouts worked to blaze the colored trails throughout the park.”
The Scouts also built and installed three benches around the Emerald Lake section of the park. Young has been a Scout since 2016, when he joined Cub Scout Pack 45, and eventually worked his way up to Troop 7083.
Young would earn 31 merit badges on his path to the Eagle rank. He also earned the Boy Scouts’ national outdoor award for his more than 70 nights of camping and credited his Scout leaders for their help in instilling the virtues of integrity, respect and community service.
Deputy Mayor John Legge was at the court to honor Young on behalf of the township committee.
“It was an honor to present Owen with this township proclamation,” Legge noted. “Knowing Owen and his family personally made this extra special. I’d like to congratulate him for his hard work and dedication and for achieving the highest rank in Scouting.”
“The township committee and I are always thrilled to recognize Eagle Scout recipients,” said Mayor Robert Zimmerman. “This achievement reflects Owen’s dedication, leadership and commitment to service, qualities that will make a lasting impact on our community and beyond.”
