Mount Laurel police investigated multiple non-credible bomb threats at township schools on April 13, while similar threats were made to as many as 20 districts in Burlington County.
Burlington City police reported that all four schools in its district received threats, leading to shelter-in-place orders and evacuations. Students eventually returned safely to classes. False threats were also investigated in the Delran, Mount Holly, Moorestown and Riverside school districts.
Despite their lack of credibility, the threats were taken seriously in Mount Laurel and Moorestown and investigated with the help of officers and K-9 units on school grounds.
Moorestown police reported that an increase in threats this school year has led to a new response plan. It includes a patrol/explosion detection K-9 to help immediately evaluate a threat and formulate a response that could involve shelter-in-place orders or relocation of students.
The decisions are based on factors that include the nature and credibility of a threat. Responding officers assess conditions in real time while supporting the appropriate response.
If an evacuation becomes necessary, a structured reunification process will be implemented at a designated location. School officials and law-enforcement personnel are trained in those procedures and will provide clear instructions to ensure a safe and orderly reunification.
“The safety and security of students, staff and the entire school community remains our top priority,” Mount Laurel Police Chief Timothy Hudnall said in a statement. “The Mount Laurel Police Department is working closely with school district leadership, school officials and law-enforcement partners to thoroughly investigate these incidents and ensure that all appropriate safety measures are in place.”
Out of an abundance of caution, additional police and security measures have been implemented as investigators determine the source of the county threats.
“We understand the concern that incidents like this cause for parents, students and school staff,” Hudnall noted. “Please know that the Mount Laurel Police Department is doing everything possible to protect our students, support our schools and fully investigate this ongoing matter.”
