The Marlton Senior Citizen Club is hosting a book sale at the Gibson House on Thursday, Aug. 6, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. All proceeds will benefit club programs.
“That’s the biggest thing; to help support the senior citizens in Evesham Township,” said Sandy Rodenbeck, the club’s membership chairperson.
The club is open to people who want to make new friends and reconnect with past acquaintances. Members enjoy luncheons, holiday-themed parties and events, games, activities like bocce ball and cornhole and Atlantic City casino trips.
Meetings are held on the first and third Thursday of each month at the Gibson House. On meeting days, the group gathers at 10:30 a.m. for coffee and doughnuts before the main meeting begins at 11. Members do not have to be Evesham residents.
Those interested in joining or learning more about the club can either show up at a meeting or search the senior citizen club on the township website. There is a $24 fee for the year.
Rodenbeck and her husband have been club members for 10 years. Once they retired, they wanted to find something to keep themselves occupied, and since they had already known about the group, they figured it was a good fit.
The club’s meetings and activities are informative, but are also about socialization, Rodenbeck emphasized. Members not only have a chance to spend time with people their own age, but they can also get advice from each other on any issues they may be having.
“When you get to our age, we just need that socialization to get out,” Rodenbeck explained. “(It’s about) the camaraderie … Sometimes, you just need that outlet to be with people your own age, and I think it’s just a good outlet for people to be with others.”
The book sale is the first for the club and will take place during a meeting. It was originally going to be a book swap between members, but since the club does well selling books at the township’s fall fest every year, it decided to open the sale up to the public.
Books will include fiction, non-fiction, thrillers, mysteries and children’s titles, with hardbacks priced at $1 and paperbacks at 50 cents. Books can also be donated for the sale and can be dropped off in the red bin located in the foyer at the side main entrance of the Gibson House.
The event is cash only.
