The board of education cited several students at its recent meeting who are star students for February.

The Mantua board of education recognized star student-award winners for February during its recent meeting.

The monthly award goes to nine students who best exemplify a particular character trait. Two students from each of the district’s preschool programs at J. Mason Tomlin and Sewell elementary schools and one student each from kindergarten to sixth grade are eligible. The winners were chosen by their teachers.

“This month, it (the trait) is service,” said Superintendent Christine Trampe. “We are celebrating students chosen for the character trait of service. This character education trait involves a willingness and proactive desire to help others without expecting personal gain or recognition.

“These students demonstrate selflessness, empathy, compassion and a volunteer spirit.”

Though nine winners were chosen, seven were honored during the meeting; the second- and fourth-grade winners were absent due to illness. They will be recognized at the next board meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 10, at Centre City school.

The winners are preschooler Genesis Isabella Lux-Teron from Evergreen, preschooler Norah Meehan from Sewell School, kindergartner Cora Maffet, first-grader Jamie Smith, third-grader Adelaide Kaufmann, fifth- grader Natalie Stahl and sixth-grader Liam Ramsey. Students were called in reverse order of grade level in order to ease the younger ones into getting up in front of others.

Each student got a certificate, a bracelet, necklace and two pens colored black and gold as a reward. Family on hand took pictures and videos of the occasion.

Trampe read statements from the winning students’ teachers about why they were chosen and what made each of them so special.

“He consistently demonstrates selflessness, whether it’s assisting his peers or supporting the teachers and staff,” she noted of Ramsey. “As a dedicated member of the student council, Liam contributes his time and energy to improving the school environment, helping out during the school day, as well as often volunteering after school to make events successful.”
