Clearview Regional’s wrestling program will be hosting a summer camp for kids of all ages and genders that will take place at the John Hughes Wrestling Facility, located behind the Mantua police station, from Monday, July 27 to Thursday, July 30.
The camp is split among three age groups. Tots, ages 5 through 6, will have class on each day from 9 to 11 a.m. The Bantam, midget and junior-aged participants, ages 7-12, will have it from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This age group must bring a snack. The last age group is for middle and high schoolers who will have sessions from 1 to 3 p.m. each day.
It will be led by Clearview High School Wrestling Head Coach, Jimmy Rollins. Helping him are four other coaches with experience in the sport, including a former Olympian who competed at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and a former state champion.
“The camp has been going on for a number of years now,” Rollins explained. “Wrestling can be a tough sport. I make sure that the kids and the parents know that you got to enjoy what you do. We have a variety of focuses, one of them is to have an enjoyment for the sport.”
While the camp is being hosted by Clearview, the camp is open to any kids in surrounding towns who have an interest in wrestling. The camp is also open to all skill levels, meaning it is open to beginner and more experienced wrestlers alike. Inclusivity is a major part of helping to market the camp, according to Rollins.
People are required to register in advance on cheddarup.com. A Facebook post from both the Clearview Junior Wrestling and Clearview High School Wrestling pages features a flyer for the event that includes a QR code that can be scanned as well. Each age group requires a fee be paid.
“It (the camp) gives access to wrestling for kids all around the area,” said Rollins. “Access they might not have otherwise. We hope the kids have fun and that we can teach them the fundamentals of wrestling.”
