On a sunny autumn Saturday, Oct. 10, five members of the Gloucester City Lions Club paid tribute to their past as they took part in the community cleanup day.

Year after year the Lions members return to one particular area along Johnson Boulevard, seeing it as a duty they complete with pride. This year, once again, the group went to the jogging track, especially the middle section, called the Lions Rest Stop.

The 4,000-square-foot oval-shaped area with park benches, shrubbery and flag poles surrounding it has special meaning for the club. It was originated by the club’s past president, Charles Thompson.

They trimmed bushes, raked leaves, pruned some trees and removed litter from the jogging track and the rest area. That section of the park is now known as “Thompson’s Oval.”

People working together to clean up their community resources and keeping the memory of a valuable Lions member alive is a good way to spend one’s time on a lovely Saturday morning.
