Township officials are calling all young civic minds.
Council approved first reading of an ordnance for the establishment of a Youth Advisory Committee at a meeting in April.
“We want to hear from them,” said Council President Lynn Jeney. “It’s more of listening … this is giving them an opportunity to speak, an opportunity to have a voice.
“They deserve to have a voice just like everybody else in this room.”
Council recently received a presentation from youth members of the community proposing the creation of an advisory committee to provide input on issues affecting young residents. Mayor Barnes Hutchins, who admitted he is not well versed on how the youth communicate with one another, was instrumental in moving the Committee forward.
“I thought they all went on Facebook,” he acknowledged. “I was wrong.”
The township recognizes the importance of engaging young residents in local government and fostering civic responsibility; leadership development; and community involvement, according to the ordinance. With the proposed measure, the township desires to create a formal mechanism through which youth may participate in local government, contribute ideas and assist in strengthening the community.
The establishment of a youth advisory committee will provide an opportunity for youth to engage in public service, develop leadership skills and serve as a liaison between township leadership and the youth population.
The purpose of the Youth Advisory Committee:
- Provide input and recommendations to the mayor and council on policies, programs and initiatives impacting youth
- Promote civic engagement, leadership development, and community service among residents;
- Serve as a communication bridge between Township leadership and young residents.
The committee will consist of 10 to 15 members who are township residents. They generally will be students in grades eight through college freshman level. Members will be appointed by the mayor with advice and consent of council.
The mayor or council may appoint an adult liaison (mayor or council member) and one staff advisor (a township employee) to the committee. Members will serve two-year terms, unless otherwise specified at the time of appointment. Members can reapply for their terms.
The youth advisory committee will meet on a monthly basis.
