The top officers have come full circle: Both grew up in town.

“Chief Dunleavy’s career is a testament to dedication, integrity, and a deep commitment to the community he grew up in and continues to serve,” the department stated in a social media post stated.

“Jeff also grew up right here in Medford, making this an amazing full-circle moment for someone who has dedicated his career to serving the community he grew up in.”

Along with the announcement of promotions, the Township Council recognized Waterman’s 27-year career with a proclamation at a meeting in October.

Mayor Erik Rebstock read the proclamation, which noted accomplishments included, but not limited to, the development of the county’s First Responders Memorial at Freedom Park; leadership and development of the Civil Response Team; the initiation of a multi-agency wellness community focused on mental health and well-being of police officers; the organization of the township’s police alumni breakfast and the launch of the county’s blue envelope initiative in the township.

Waterman, who became a police officer with the Medford Township Police Department in 1998, thanked everyone for their support including Dunleavy and Samalonis.

“We had pretty significant challenges during my tenure as chief,” said Waterman, who became chief in 2021.

“I’m very proud of my time as a police officer throughout the years. There were a lot of incidents in my life that I will never forget and will stay with me.

“… There are memories and friendships that I will carry with all of you,” he continued, thanking everyone in the administration and beyond for their kindness.
