A 61-year-old Cinnaminson man died in a lightning strike on July 16 that also injured dozens – including some Cub Scouts – at an outdoor archery range in Monmouth County, according to the Jackson Township Police Department.

The incident occurred just before 7:15 p.m. at the Black Knights Bow Benders Range in Jackson Township. Police identified the victim as Robert Montgomery, an instructor there. Fourteen others, one as young as 7 years old, were transported to area hospitals for treatment, according to reports.

The United Bowhunters of New Jersey extended its deepest condolences to the families and friends affected by the lightning strike in a social media post.

“Our hearts ache for the victims and everyone impacted by this sudden event,” the post stated. “No words can fully express the sorrow we feel for the grief and pain experienced by the loved ones and the entire local community. As an organization dedicated to promoting both the enjoyment of the outdoors and the safety of all participants, we are profoundly saddened by this tragedy.

“The United Bowhunters of New Jersey have always prioritized safety above all else, especially when it comes to being in the outdoors,” the post continued. “We remain vigilant to changing weather conditions and always err on the side of caution to help safeguard our members and fellow outdoor enthusiasts.

“This incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable power of nature.”

The National Weather Service had issued a severe thunderstorm warning in the area during the time of the strike. Gov. Phil Murphy noted in a post on X that he was briefed on the lighting strike.

“Please pray for everyone involved in this tragic incident,” he said.
