Deptford hosted its annual trunk or treat on Oct. 24 at the township recreation center, drawing about 2,000 people – 800 of whom were kids dressed in costumes – over two hours.

More than 40 vendors representing township organizations and businesses participated by setting up tables with information and featuring car trunks filled with Halloween decorations and themes. Among other participants, some of them dressed in costumes, were the Deptford police and fire departments, the township library, Deptford Junior Wrestling and Deptford Girls Softball League.

“It was pure fun,” said Mayor Paul Medany. “The kids’ faces lit up when they saw everything, and they loved all the costumes that people were wearing. The kids wore their costumes, and a lot of the parents did as well. Everything was fantastic and it went smoothly. It’s one of the biggest of the year, a close second to the fall festival.”

“We were so excited to see so many familiar faces at the Deptford trunk or treat,” the library noted on Facebook.

Also on hand were members of council and township administrators who took in the sights and talked with residents about a number of topics. The event was a team effort between the recreation and public works departments; the former helped organize the event, while the latter helped set up decorations that featured common Halloween symbols such as jack-o-lanterns

“They (recreation and public works) did a fantastic job,” Medany said. “Public works painted a lot of the decorations and coordinated closely with recreation, who helped set everything up. All of our events are designed to help bring people together and build community spirit.”
