Deptford will give back to its seniors on Thursday, Dec. 11, with the annual winter wonderland at the community center.

From 6 to 8 p.m., the center will be decked out with Christmas decorations and each resident who attends will receive a gift from the township. Christmas characters such as Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus will be in attendance.

“Everyone will get something out of it,” said Mayor Paul Medany. “It’s all about giving back to our residents and the senior population. We’re all just trying to have some fun.”

Township employees will be on hand to help bake fresh and homemade desserts; hot chocolate and decaffeinated coffee will be served.

Something new in this year’s event is inviting a local restaurant – not yet named – to provide light food such as appetizers and finger food to seniors. Other Deptford businesses have also been invited.

“We’re inviting local businesses in order to help promote them,” Medany explained. “A lot of the event stays the same every year, but we always try to do different things.”

To add to the winter wonderland atmosphere, the townshp is inviting a DJ Lily to play holiday music and other classic Christmas carols. Guests will also be able to play a wide variety of games.

The event is open to Deptford residents only. RSVP in advance to the parks and recreation department by calling (856) 845-0804 or emailing deptfordparksandrec@deptford-nj.org by Monday. The township expects about 300 people to attend.

“It’s a way to give back to the senior community here in Deptford,” Medany said. “They get to come out, meet with friends and we get to meet a lot of different people and talk to them.”
