Children from ages 7 to 12 gathered at the Marie Fleche Memorial Library’s young readers room on July 15 to participate in the Wednesday Crafternoon Series.
Program Coordinator Erica Quiles sat on the floor surrounded by a circle of children and instructed them on the week’s activity, craft weaving. She wrapped bright strands of yarn around popsicle sticks to create a triangular design. Red, yellow, and orange containers filled with balls of yarn in an array of colors were set out beside the kids.
And parents occasionally stepped in to help.
Quiles was pleased with the enthusiastic response to the craft of weaving, a first for kids in the library’s weekly summer series.
“We usually do a lot of painting and a lot of sand,” she explained. “But I do work a lot with yarn myself, and I thought that it would be something new and fun for the kids to do. It’s very good for fine motor skills and concentration, so I thought that this would work out well. They (participants) get to pick all their own colors.
“They’re very creative – and it’s successful.”
Sean Czajkowski was among the youth participants. With his mother Carolyn nearby, he chose black yarn for his project, since it’s one of his favorite colors. He said the craft projects provided by the library are what he enjoys most about visiting.
The library’s next session this Wednesday – at the series’ regular time of 1:30 p.m. – will focus on sand art. A Play-Doh play date will take place from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday for children 3 and up. The Lego Club is scheduled at the same times on Friday, Aug. 14, for those 5 and up. There will be a balloon twisting workshop at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 30, also for kids 5 and older.
The “Unearth A Story” children’s summer reading program will continue until Friday, Aug. 14, as will the adult summer reading program. Prizes will be awarded on the last day of each.
