During the month of July, Congregation Kol Ami’s ‘Tikkun Olam’ committee sponsored their third annual backpack and school supply drive. This effort, led by sub-committee chair, Karen Marinoff, collected and filled over 300 backpacks of supplies, and gift cards to be donated to the Voorhees Center for Family Services, Camden Rescue Mission, Interfaith Homeless Outreach Council, Camden Kids Alley, and the Katz Jewish Community Center. The efforts and contributions made by members of Kol Ami consisted of both donations and assistance in filling the backpacks with school supplies.
The start of a new school year is filled with adrenaline and excitement for what lies ahead, both for the students and the parents. Every parent wants to provide their child with the tools they need to be successful, but in some cases, financial constraints affect their ability to do so. One filled backpack can be the difference in a child’s life: allowing them to enter the new year with confidence and pride. To be a part of that impact is the reason this type of meaningful work is so important.
Judaism teaches that we should do justly and walk humbly with God. Congregation Kol Ami is driven and guided by these principles of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world), and the community has a proud tradition of helping those in the community who need it most. The tradition compels the group to take-action, and Kol Ami’s ‘Tikkun Olam’ Committee is proud to personify the concepts of engagement, advocacy, and doing good.
