Despite the cloudy skies, imaginations and creativity shined bright at the Orchards Family Success Center during the STEM Explorers: Homesweet Home, Family Birdhouse Builders workshop on July 7.
Residents gathered in the community center’s workshop room to enjoy a free, family-friendly activity. With the help of their parents, children assembled and painted wooden birdhouses from a DIY craft kit. Soothing, cheerful music filled the small room as families worked together on the craft project.
Alex T. (for privacy reasons, he has chosen not to disclose his full name), a local volunteer who frequents the community center, enjoys giving his time to enrich the lives of others.
“Everybody always has a good time,” he said. “It’s very positive. It’s always a nice-sized group.”
“I tend to run some of these things,” he continued. “So I get to see a lot of the same faces. It’s a great way to get resources from the state out to the actual community and get opportunities that normally a lot of us will never have with the income status these days.”
Alex T. stated that the community center provides a relaxing environment for residents to come out and learn new skills such as robotics, arts and crafts, music, and gardening.
Winslow Township resident Ruqayyah White and her two young sons, Ayaan and Ali, enjoyed the birdhouse craft activity.
“I think that it’s very nice for kids to get involved with some STEM activities and get their brains working with building and learning,” White stated. “And helping the brain develop by following directions when they’re doing STEM activities, like the birdhouse.”
In addition to the birdhouse craft activity, the Orchards Family Success Center offers Zumba classes, family support groups, sewing classes, a walking club, a teen club, and a Lego Masters club.
