Resident Jessica Procopio hosted a lemonade stand on July 5 where 100% of the proceeds went towards the Shevlin family, also from Washington Township.
The family went through a heartbreaking tragedy on June 27 when Elijah “Eli” Shevlin sadly drowned in the pool of the family’s home. His father, Mike, and paramedics did what they could, but Shevlin was later pronounced dead at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He was only 3 years old. Eli also has two siblings, a twin sister, Ella, and an older brother, Mickey.
“I’ll spend the rest of my days wondering what could have been,” Mike Shevlin said in a post on Facebook. “What he would have done. How Elijah could have changed the world. But I’ll also spend the rest of my life remembering the sweet and gentle soul he is.
“The kindhearted kid with a huge smile that lit the room. The laid-back guy who loves nothing more than to snuggle up and watch a movie before going to bed at 7:30 sharp. I’ll remember his shaggy blonde hair, his big blue eyes that light up when he hears the piano, the love for all things orange and purple and his diet consisting of chicken nuggets and bananas.”
Hearing about this, Procopio decided to host the lemonade stand at the home of the Shevlin family on Longwood Drive. The event saw a massive turnout from people in Washington Township and neighboring communities, like Williamstown.
Members of the Washington Township Fire Department were also in attendance for the event, who came with a firetruck. Firefighters also offered kids a look at their gear and let them try some of it on.
“We are truly humbled by the love and support our community showed,” Procopio said on Facebook. This lemonade stand was never about us—it was about honoring Eli’s memory and letting his family know they are surrounded by people who care.
“Seeing so many friends, neighbors, first responders, local businesses, and families come together was something we’ll never forget. Thank you to everyone who donated, volunteered, shared our event, or simply showed up. Together, we reminded Eli’s family that they are not alone, and that is something truly special.”
The Shevlin family also gave thanks to the community for their support on social media.
“From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for the incredible outpouring of love, compassion, prayers and support you have shown us,” Sandra Shevlin said. “Your kindness has brought us comfort and strength during the most unbearable time of our lives.”
