‘A win in the end’

One addiction resource lends a hand to another

Tribe Intensive, an addiction treatment center in Marlton, will host a charity golf outing for the nonprofit RapRoom Parent To Parent at Little Mill Country Club on Monday, Aug. 24.

Tribe Intensive was originally founded in 2019 in Jensen Beach, Florida, by Marlton native Thomas Maguire. After receiving treatment in Florida for an opioid addiction, he started working for Midwest Detox at Ambrosia in West Palm Beach. Over time, he started to feel that he could develop a different method of treatment to help more people reach sobriety.

That’s when he and business partner Kenneth Link III started Tribe Intensive; besides Marlton and Jensen Beach, it has also expanded into Freehold, though that location is not yet open.

“When an addict is getting sober for the first time, a big piece of it is that they think their life is over,” said Maguire’s brother Greg, who serves as Tribe Intensive’s chief commercial officer. “We just want to show people that there is another way to walk. It takes a while for the brain to re-regulate to where you’re drinking a cup of coffee and you’re getting that dopamine release that you should get from drinking a cup of coffee or reading a book on the beach.

“All of that stuff on day one or two of being sober feels like torture. It doesn’t feel like fun.”

Tribe Intensive offers several addiction treatment programs, including Partial Hospitalization (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient (IOP) programs. Those who seek sobriety at Tribe Intensive can continue their recovery journey through the organization’s outpatient program, similar to its IOP program in New Jersey, but with fewer groups.

Outpatient treatment allows the client to slowly integrate back into the real world while benefiting from a structured program with community support.

RapRoom Parent to Parent is a social services organization in Marlton that helps and advocates for families and their loved ones. Their services include – but are not limited to – helping locate detox, treatment and continuum of care in the state.

RapRoom Parent to Parent also offers a number of support groups, including grief/loss groups for family members and loved ones. It can only operate via a state grant, but when that wasn’t received this year, Greg Maguire and Tribe Intensive stepped up.

“I love that this resource (RapRoom Parent To Parent) is right here in Marlton for the community,” Maguire noted, “and I would hate to see anything happen to it. It is (by having the golf outing) doing something that really should be all of our mission in helping people through this nasty disease …

“The highs are really high and the lows are really low, but I’m dedicating my life to fighting this disease, and I know we’re going to have our ups and we’re going to have our downs, but we’re going to win in the end.”

Registration and breakfast for the golf outing will be held at 8:45 a.m., with a shotgun start at 10. Lunch and dinner will also be provided. For more information on Tribe Intensive, visit www.tribeintensivenj.com.
