There was excitement in the air at the Billy Flynn Sports Complex on a beautiful Friday evening May 29, home of the Gloucester City Little League.
“We are proud and excited to be able to celebrate this legend of the Gloucester City Little League, Dom Staiano, a man who dedicated 50 years of coaching and service to this organization and the youth of our city,” GCLL President Keith O’Donnell said.
“He started coaching before his son, Dom Jr., ever stepped on the field. The lessons he taught the players extended beyond the field. He cared about every team, every player and the entire league,” O’Donnell said before officially dedicating the Dom Staiano Field to the delight of more than 100 family members, friends and coaches in attendance.
“Thank you for your dedication Dom. You have made us better and helped us grow as human beings,” said O’Donnell, who was coached by Mr. Staiano as a little league ballplayer.
“This is a special night for the league,” said son-in-law Doug Ziegler. “He stressed fundamentals and discipline and continued coaching after his grandchildren finished playing.”
“This feels great. I’ve enjoyed coaching for 50 years,” said a smiling Mr. Staiano, who was joined by his six children, 19 grandchildren and six great grandchildren for the celebration.
“My dad could not wait for Opening Day every year,” said his son, Dom Staiano Jr., who was happy the ballfield was being dedicated to his dad. “It is long overdue. He kept coaching long after his children and grandchildren were done playing.”
“I think the dedication is great and I am honored to be part of it,” said son-in-law Keith Wall, pointing out that the league’s inaugural Hall of Fame members this year were Mr. Staiano, Jim Flood, Tony Eller and Bob Plews.
During his speech to the crowd, O’Donnell said Mr. Staiano would “tell you exactly what he thought and motivate you rather than discourage you. What a great coach.”
