Reducing distracted driving

Harrison Township police are participating in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) National Distracted Driving Awareness Month for April.

The department is attempting to reduce traffic-related fatalities in the community to zero. A common distraction is looking at a phone while driving. According to a state study, 6,872 tickets have been issued for that offense since last April.

Township police have used social media as a means to communicate the dangers of distracted driving.

“Your most important cargo may be riding in a car seat behind you while you travel,” the department said in a statement. “Kids are masters of observational learning and will often develop the same good – and bad – habits of their parents. Keep your kids safe now and in the future by putting the phone down and focusing on your driving, even if it means you have to listen to the same preschool soundtrack on repeat for the thousandth time to keep them quiet.

“Set a good example and keep your eyes on the road.”
