The Harrison Township Committee meeting on Feb. 2 saw the promotion of five officers through township resolutions.

Lt. David Marro was promoted to the rank of captain, Sgt. Kurt Pflugfelder to lieutenant, Cpl. Kevin McGowan to sergeant, office Katelin Maken to corporal and SLEO II James O’Donnell to patrolman.

“All these promotions came after an arduous testing process,” said Police Chief Ronald Cundey. “There’s a lot of work that went into it by each and every one of these officers. I’d like to commend every officer that took part in that process and every officer that’s getting promoted tonight for being involved in this process and everybody wanting to take leadership roles here.”

All five officers were accompanied by their families to the meeting, where they were sworn into their new positions by Harrison Mayor Adam Wingate. Cundey highlighted each officer’s background, including where they trained and prior experience with other departments.

“Lt. Marro attended and graduated from Gloucester County Police Academy as an alternate route candidate in July of 2002,” Cundey noted of Marro. “In June of 2003, he became a patrolman with the Harrison Township Police Department. In 2013, he was promoted to sergeant and took care of the patrol platoon, supervising four officers, and then in January 2021, Marro was promoted to lieutenant, where he was the administrative commander of the police department.”

Cundey also gave a shoutout to recently retired police Capt. Adam McEvoy, who was at the meeting. He retired on Feb. 1 after more than 20 years of service. McEvoy began his career with the Harrison department in December of 2000 as an SLEO II. Over the years, he served as a patrol officer, SRO (School Resource Officer), field training officer, D.A.R.E./L.E.A.D. instructor, investigator, detective and detective sergeant.

After the swearing-ins, meeting participants talked with and had photos taken with the newly promoted officers.

The next committee meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
