Deptford hosted its annual Fund for Families event – what it calls a night of fun – on Oct. 20 to support both the township veterans committee and a family fund.

Proceeds were split between the two entities, and while the total amount raised has yet to be determined, the township expects it will be substantial given that about 200 people attended the fundraiser at Adelphia Restaurant.

“It was a great crowd,” said Mayor Paul Medany. “The room was in the downstairs area of Adelphia, and we were pretty much at max capacity with the room we had.”

Funds were raised from sales of tickets that included food and drinks. Donations from local businesses provided gifts for a basket auction.

The veterans committee will use the money raised to help local veterans and maintain areas dedicated to them.

“Recently they bought flags to be placed at our Veterans Park and helped a veteran get back on his feet,” Medany noted. “We want to build up that committee in order to get state and county benefits for veterans.”

The fund for families is money saved by the township to donate to families in an emergency, such as a house fire. Deptford usually makes five to six of those donations each year.

“We’ll write them a check in order to buy new clothes and a place to stay until they get things together,” Medany explained. “We like to build up a fund to have, as well as have a cushion for extra. It (the event) was all about a good cause.”
