The Lenape Regional High School District named Assistant Superintendent Matt Webb (in red tie) to the top job at a July 23 meeting. He replaces Carol Birnbohm, who will retire effective on Sept. 1.

A familiar face will lead the Lenape Regional High School District.

The district unanimously approved the appointment of Assistant Superintendent Matt Webb to the top job during a special meeting on July 23. He will succeed Carol Birnbohm, who retires effective Sept. 1 after 13 years leading the district.

Birnbohm announced her retirement in May and the search for a new superintendent began. A Cherokee High School alumna, Birnbohm became superintendent in 2012 after an education career in mathematics at Cherokee High that began in 1992.

Webb’s contract starts on Sept. 1 and is extended through June 30, 2029. His annual salary will be $242,000, said Elaine Kurtz, coordinator of administrative services for the district.

Webb is a longtime employee who joined the district in 2003 as assistant principal of Seneca High School. He has since built a reputation for leading with both his heart and mind. He garnered many letters of recommendation supporting his promotion from colleagues and families who described him as a connected and highly compassionate leader, according to a district press release.

“Matt brings invaluable institutional knowledge to the table,” noted Birnbohm, who took to X to congratulate Webb on his appointment after the meeting. “In a district as complex as ours – which includes four high schools, eight municipalities and a 1,000 employees – this level of experience is essential. Relationships built over decades have given him what I would describe as ‘trust equity.’

“It’s the kind of credibility and connection that cannot be quickly replicated.”

The Lenape Regional High School District’s high schools – Lenape, Shawnee, Cherokee and Seneca – as well as the Sequoia Alternative and Transition to Adult Programs, educate about 6,600 students from eight Burlington County communities: Evesham, Medford, Medford Lakes, Mount Laurel, Shamong, Southampton, Tabernacle and Woodland.

Webb began his 32-year career as a special education teacher before transitioning into administration at Seneca. He spent the past 22 years in various administrative roles, including as director of the Sequoia program, where Webb made community service a central focus of the program and has since found motivation in the notion, “It’s hard to feel down on yourself when you’re helping someone else up.”

“This philosophy speaks to the heart of Matt’s leadership style, one rooted in service, humility and care,” added Birnbohm.

Webb initially moved into district offices as director of programs and planning. As his responsibilities grew to include oversight of district-wide initiatives, he earned a promotion to assistant superintendent in 2018, leading daily operations at the high schools and Sequoia.

Webb also oversaw some of the most complex committees, including artificial intelligence and COVID, drawing on his strengths as a thoughtful leader who can look ahead without overlooking his priority – the people in the district. He headed the budget committee and led district-wide policy and regulation development.

Webb was also the district’s Affirmative Action Officer and Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying (HIB) Coordinator.

“We are very excited to have Matt succeed Carol as Lenape Regional High School District superintendent,” stated board of education president Charles Roseboro. “He has a long track record of success within the district and has garnered the support of leaders throughout the organization, which will help ensure the district remains on its trajectory of continued excellence.”

As superintendent, Webb said he will continue a leadership style grounded in “collaboration, transparent communication and data-informed decision-making, all in service to supporting student success.

“I’ve had the privilege of learning from exceptional leaders,” he remarked, “including Dr. Birnbohm. And I consider it the highest professional honor to build upon her legacy.”
