The Deptford Eventure Center will be the setting for residents to interact with township council and the police department.

Deptford will host its first Cones with Cops and Council event on Tuesday, July 22, at the Eventure Center in Westville.

Residents will be able to meet and talk with members of the township police and council – including Mayor Paul Medany – over ice cream. Unlike some of the police ice cream events at businesses around town – including one at Ice Cream Love earlier this year – the township event is a team effort between council and police department.

“It’s all about public safety,” said Medany. “People can meet with the police and council in a relaxed setting, something they might not get the chance to otherwise.”

The idea for Cones with Cops and Council came from a resident who presented the idea at the township’s private weekly events meetings.

“We just bang ideas around at these meetings,” Medany explained. “Someone brought it up at one of these meetings, we really liked it, and we went with it. It was a team effort to set it up.”

The ice cream event is a new effort by police to connect with residents, something they do at semi-annual Coffee with a Cop events at area locations like Target.

“Ice cream on a hot, summer day?” the department noted on the social media pages. “Say no more! We can’t wait to see you all there!”

The township hopes to draw about 100 people and is advertising the event more often as the date approaches. Council and the police department have also advertised the event on their social media pages. The Eventure Center is located at 510 Deptford Ave. in Westville.

“Hopefully with the publicity and ads we’ll be putting out,” Medany said, “we’ll get more people out. It’s meant to get us all together, eat ice cream and hang out with each other.”
