Vineland’s international glass packaging manufacturer Gerresheimer recently announced the closure of its long-standing production facility, a move that will eliminate 139 jobs.
According to state regulatory filings, the manufacturing phase-out at the West Forest Grove Road plant is scheduled to begin in September. The complete reorganization will be complete by the end of next year.
The German business produces vials and other containers for pharmaceuticals and cosmetics brands.
Company executives said the strategy was a necessary step in a broader global transformation program designed to optimize the company’s production network and drive operational excellence. Gerresheimer is apparently consolidating its vial and cartridge production, transferring the Vineland workload to its facilities in Morganton, North Carolina, and Querétaro, Mexico. Management noted that affected New Jersey workers will be permitted to apply for open positions at the North Carolina plant.
Under New Jersey’s strict WARN Act regulations, Gerresheimer is legally required to provide a 90-day advance notice to its workforce alongside a mandatory severance package consisting of one week of pay for each year of service.
The company, with headquarters in Germany, has 38 production sites and more than 13,000 workers in the U.S., Europe, and Asia.
