The Berlin Borough Junior Police Academy wrapped its 2025 session after a full week of engaging, hands-on experiences designed to introduce local youth to the field of law enforcement.
The week-long program began on June 23 with a packed schedule of activities, training and guest demonstrations. From day one, recruits were immersed in an introduction to police work, starting with a tour of the Berlin police department headquarters and patrol vehicles to learning the structure and daily operations of a law-enforcement agency.
Tuesday marked one of the academy’s most energetic days, beginning with military-style drill and formation at the Berlin Community Center. The junior cadets underwent physical training and participated in team-building exercises and defensive tactics sessions. They also got a visit from the Camden County Bomb Squad, which offered a close look at high-tech tools and procedures.
By Thursday of the week, the recruits had built a strong foundation and were ready for more specialized demonstrations. The Camden County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit showcased the skills and training of working dogs and the lower Camden County Special Response Team introduced the class to some of its tactical gear and techniques.
The final day of the academy ended with a community celebration that included the Berlin Fire Department and featured a hands-on introduction to fire safety and response. The recruits explored fire apparatus and practiced basic emergency techniques like stop, drop, and roll.
In a public statement, the department acknowledged help from police staff, local emergency services and community partners. Special thanks went to Chief Mike Kernan and Squad Company 21-1 for teaching cadets other fire-safety skills, including hose line advancement.
A hose then helped cadets end a hot week with a cold splash.
