Homeward Bound faces overcrowding

Homeward Bound Pet Adoption Center in Gloucester Township recently urged the community to take action as the shelter reached near capacity, in part by offering a limited-time promotion: Adopt a dog for just $1.

The Blackwood shelter is open Tuesday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. While the dog offer excluded small canines and puppies, many adult dogs in need of loving homes were eligible for the promotion.

“Homeward Bound is currently taking in more dogs than usual and space is filling up fast,” said Camden County Commissioner Jeffrey Nash, who serves as the liaison to the shelter. “We are in need of adopters, so please, if you can, consider opening your heart and your home to a new dog.”

This canine initiative is part of a larger effort to avoid overcrowding at the shelter while finding permanent homes for dogs who are often overlooked. With the rising costs of pet care and housing, many families have surrendered animals, placing added pressure on local shelters.

The shelter promotion came at a critical time for animal welfare organizations nationwide who are grappling with high intake numbers and limited adoptions, as they did after COVID, when people spent time indoors and thought they could handle a pet.

By offering dogs at just $1, Homeward Bound hoped to eliminate the financial barrier that may prevent some families from adopting.

Even at a reduced fee, all dogs come spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. If you’re unable to adopt, the shelter also encourages fostering, volunteering or donating supplies. Every effort helps provide care for the animals and supports the shelter’s mission.
