UPS recently announced that George Lodovico, 73, of Vineland is New Jersey’s senior safe driver, with 43 years of accident-free driving. He drives a 26-foot-long brown UPS delivery van around the streets of South Jersey and is not your average driver, going over 1.5 million miles without an accident.
He has won past awards, but Lodovico was lauded again by UPS as the company released its new list of 54 drivers inducted into the “Circle of Honor” for going 25 years without an accident.
“New Jersey boasts 225 active Circle of Honor drivers with a combined 6,366 years of accident-free driving,” the company stated in a news release.
There are 3,499 total UPS drivers in New Jersey, with 48 elite drivers from the state among 1,316 newly inducted worldwide into the Circle of Honor, an honorary organization for UPS drivers. New Jersey boasts 331 Circle of Honor drivers with a combined 8,550 years of accident-free driving.
Lodovico started with the company in December of 1963 to help with the Christmas rush. He was celebrated at a ceremony surrounded by his past and present co-workers. With no formal plans to retire, he still looks forward to leaving for work at 2:30 in the morning.
“I can’t say enough about all the men and women who were inducted this year,” said Trayce Parker, president, UPS East Region. “Their dedication to safe driving on America’s roadways keeps them safe, improves public safety and sets a high standard for professional drivers.”
Founded in 1907, UPS issued its first driver handbook in 1917 and began recognizing safe drivers in 1923.
