Courtesy of Washington Township Leland Christianson received a certificate of recognition and Police Chief Patrick Gurcsik presented Leland with the chief’s challenge coin for calling 911 after his mother suffered a medical emergency last year.

At just 8 years old, Leland Christianson is a true Hurffville School Husky Hero.

When his mom had a medical emergency and became unresponsive last year, the Hurffville Elementary School student jumped into action and called 911. It was two days before Christmas, and like most kids, Leland was getting ready for the holidays, Mayor Anthony DellaPia recounted during a January council meeting.

“After he got done there, he still kept his bearings,” the mayor said. “He called his pop pop and then called his mom’s boyfriend to get more assistance. While he waited there patiently – even people my age can’t wait patiently – he looked after his (younger) sister before medical help came.”

For his heroic actions, Leland earned a certificate of recognition and Police Chief Patrick Gurcsik presented him with the chief’s challenge coin.

“We want to recognize Leland,” DellaPia said of the youth’s heroic actions.

Leland got a round of applause. He was surrounded by his family, Gurcsik and police command staff, Washington Township Council, Hurffville Elementary Principal Erica Holck and his many teachers. In a social media post, the police department noted that it (was) “incredibly proud” of Leland’s actions and dedication to his family and community.
