Plevins Earns MLK Award for Contributions to Community

Steve Plevins was recently honored by the Vineland African American Community Development Corporation (VAACDC) with a Martin Luther King Award in recognition of his contributions to the community and his successful work with children and youth. On behalf of the citizens of Cumberland County, he was honored as a trailblazer and saluted for his efforts to continue the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the VAACDC. 

Plevins graduated from Vineland High School and was president of his graduating class. He attended the University of Maryland and did undergraduate and graduate work there. He later did graduate work at the Universiry of Northern Colorado and majored in Therapeutic Recreation, which emphasized rehabilitaion of youth through recreation and sports.

Returning to Maryland, Plevins became a community recreation director in Prince George’s County. His program was honored by ESPN for the most professional athletes in a county program, including  Sugar Ray Leonard.  

Upon his return to Vineland, Plevins founded  “Broaden Your Horizons,” a five-day afterschool program, which earned recognition from Gov. Christie Whitman as the best in the state and eventually evolved into the Vineland Boys and Girls Club. In 2023, Plevins was honored before Congress for his enduring impact on the Vineland community. His numerous accolades celebrate his unwavering dedication to inner city and at-risk youth in Vineland.
