Harrison Township Mayor Louis Manzo attended his final committee meeting on Dec. 16, with residents acknowledging his dedication to the community and the conclusion of his term.
Manzo has been mayor for 17 years and has led Mullica Hill through difficult times, including COVID in 2020 and the destructive tornado that blew through town in 2021. He gave credit to current and former committee members with whom he served with over the years; township employees; and the police department, among others, for helping him throughout his tenure.
“It’s been quite a ride,” noted Manzo, who will take his leave at the end of the month. “It has been an honor to be involved with them all these years. Everybody’s path to seeking local elected office is different yet similar, I would guess. In my case it was really rooted in a desire to help with getting better youth sports, recreational fields and facilities.
“Back in the early to mid 2000s,” he recounted, “I was coaching my daughters in soccer and basketball, and at the time, Ella Harris Park was the only park in town, and we (the sports leagues) were falling all over each other. I was on the board of the soccer complex and soccer leadership was seeking to have a candidate in 2007 that would make that improvement to our youth sports.”
They got their wish, as Manzo helped establish William Wilt Soccer Complex and Pleasant Valley School’s soccer field, both open to other sports.
The mayor’s fellow committee members honored him at the meeting, where Deputy Mayor Lawrence Moore gifted Manzo with a framed gavel.
“Lou Manzo’s legacy is deeply woven into the fabric of Harrison Township.” Moore emphasized. “From enhancing public services to championing our historic Main Street and supporting local businesses, he has always strived to balance progress with preserving our community’s unique charm.
“For those fortunate enough to know Lou personally, you’ve undoubtedly witnessed his energy, compassion, sincerity and profound love for his family and community.”
Manzo’s departure means two new members will join the committee: TJ Coakley and Adam Wingate will be sworn in at a reorganization meeting on Thursday, Jan. 2, at 5:30 p.m., when the committee will also vote on the next mayor.
