A silent auction was held during the Fund for Deptford Families fundraiser on Oct. 21 to raise money for the organization Operation Yellow Ribbon and township families in crisis.

The township hosted its annual Fund for Deptford Families fundraiser at Adelphia Restaurant on Oct. 21 to benefit Operation Yellow Ribbon and residents in crisis.

Operation Yellow Ribbon provides soldiers stationed overseas with care packages of supplies and other items, including candy, toothbrushes and hygiene products. Families in crisis are helped with temporary housing. The organization’s founder, Dave Silver, spoke during the fundraiser.

“The money from the event will go towards the program to help package everything up and send them out,” he said. “The money also goes into a fund to help families … We can’t give them much, but we will help them for about a week or two.”

According to Mayor Paul Medany, between 150 and 200 people attended the fundraiser, which included a silent auction of gift baskets provided by local businesses. An exact total of money raised has yet to be determined. The township partnered with the Deptford Veterans Commission and VFW Post 2174 in Westville Grove for the event, where some veterans spoke.

“We had veterans speak about … (the care packages),” said Medany. “They said that it shows that people care about them. The program is truly a great thing.”

The mayor praised the township recreation department for organizing the event along with other township personnel who were on hand to see the fruits of their labor.

“They did a fantastic job in setting everything up,” Medany noted. “This one (the event) helps the people.”
