Students in teacher Gina Dolores’ first-grade class at Monroe’s Whitehall Elementary School are getting lessons each day to practice sounding out letters, blending sounds and building new words. The students read stories together, explore picture clues and play games. By the end of the year, they are expected to develop strong reading and spelling skills to become capable readers.
