Crowds gathered for the Monroe Township Community Affairs 7th Annual Independence Day Puppy Parade at Owens Dog Park on July 8.

Monroe Township’s furry friends dressed in festive apparel as onlookers watched them strut their stuff in the post-July 4 parade at the front of the dog park. Dogs, large and small, were accompanied by their pet parents, some of whom were dressed in holiday-themed attire that matched their pets.

The original date was July 2, but the event was canceled due to the extreme heat. Although the parade has been around for seven years, it has only been held at the dog park for four years.

The judges’ panel included Michelle Perez, Sandy Luna, and Rosie Harvey. The dogs were judged in four categories, which were Most Patriotic, Cutest, Funniest, and Oldest. Each dog that won in a category was presented with a trophy and a goodie bag filled with treats and toys.

Every dog that participated in the parade was given a ribbon and a treat or toy from the prize box.

Department Supervisor Brandee Derieux served as the MC at the event, announcing the winners. A photographer was present to take photos of the dogs and their owners.

“My director is here, Donna Park, along with the mayor and a bunch of our volunteers who helped put this stuff together,” she said. “There’s a whole crew of people that make this stuff happen. We start two or three months early, and everybody signs their dogs up.”

“The dogs come out, people come out and like to watch it,” she added. “It’s a lot of fun. We love it.”

Mayor Greg Wolfe mingled and chatted with residents who attended the event.

“This event keeps growing each and every year,” Wolfe said. “Our credit goes to our Community Affairs Department, and it’s fantastic to see all the dogs out here, all the dog lovers, and the great costumes. And all the dogs are getting treats. So, for the animal lovers, next year, make sure you’re here.”
