Washington Township will host its 4th of July on the first Saturday of that month with its annual parade.
The festivities will begin at the high school at 6:30 p.m. and the parade will exit from lots 11 and 12. It will go down Hurffville-Cross Keys Road, through Greentree Road to connect to Egg Harbor Road, through Ganttown Road and back to the high school.
The parade will also go past Veterans Park. Residents are invited to set up seating along the route.
“It’s a community type of event,” said parks and recreation coordinator Barbara Moore. “It’s really a fun time. When I go to set up, there’s people that are set up and lining up for a spot to see the parade.”
The parade itself will feature several local businesses, string bands, the Jimmy Buffet cover band Parrot Beach, the high-school marching band and several of the school’s clubs and sports teams, among them the football team, which won its first state championship in November.
In good weather, people are known to come by in convertible cars and wave to onlookers. Members of township council will also be in attendance.
“We’re so grateful to all the families, friends and kids who lined the streets with smiles, cheers and laughter,” Councilman Peter Del Borrello III recalled of last year’s event. “It’s your energy that makes this town so special.”
The police department will be on hand to interact with residents. Moore looks forward to this year’s event given that it comes as Americans celebrate the 250th anniversary of the country’s independence.
“We’re really excited for America’s 250th birthday,” she noted. “There’s going to be so many people in attendance that I can’t put a count on it. This is one event we always look forward to.”
