Graduates of Washington Township High School closed the book on their high-school careers on June 25.

Hundreds of friends and family surrounded the class of 2026 at the school’s football field. Some underclassmen were also on hand, including members of the school choir and Air Force JROTC program.

Several seniors – out of 519 – took to the stage at mid-field to address their fellow classmates, school staff and district administrators. Their speeches ranged from reminiscing about their time as high schoolers, to what comes next.

“High school was not easy,” said valedictorian Karen Cao. “For some of us, the difficulties were in the course work and in the challenge of keeping our grades up. For others, it was difficult to even wake up in the mornings to prepare to fight our unseen battles.

“This uncertainty just doesn’t disappear with graduation,” she added. “I’ve spent every day wondering what I’d do with life outside the restaurant that I grew up in. And now that this moment is here, I’ll admit that I’m terrified of what’s to come next.

“If you share my fears, I urge you to look for the love that surrounds you. Reflect on the journey that brought you here and remember that you have more love waiting for you in the coming year.”

Once diplomas were distributed, Raymond Anderson III addressed the students one last time as principal. He gave them some lasting words of encouragement for the next stage of their lives.

“What I can say with all my heart is that we believe in you,” he remarked. “And we know that whatever path you choose, you will find a sense of purpose, accomplishment and great joy. That is our wish for you today and always.”
