Last year’s top Voorhees Got Talent performers included Kelsey Brown (left to right), Natalie Spegel, Lydia Mall and Blake Boshnack. Auditions for this year’s competition will be held on Sept. 21 and 28 in Voorhees.

The spotlight will once again shine on local performers as the Voorhees Arts Commission presents Voorhees Got Talent, a community-wide talent show that is one of the township’s most popular events.

Auditions are scheduled for 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 21, and Sunday, Sept. 28, at the Lions Lake Community Center.

“Voorhees Got Talent was created to shine a spotlight on the incredible and diverse talents within our local community,” said Gabby Horvitz, advisor to the commission. “We wanted to create a platform where performers of all ages and backgrounds could express themselves and share their gifts in a supportive, celebratory environment.

“Over the years, the event has grown from a small showcase into one of the most anticipated arts events in our township.”

Auditions are open to participants of all ages and talents, from vocalists, dancers and magicians to visual artists, poets and comedians. Performers can register online in advance through the commission’s website or by using the QR codes found on promotional materials. Each audition date will feature a different lineup, with selected acts moving on to the next round of performances.

“We’re open to all types of talent,” Horvitz noted. “Whether it’s singing, dancing, acting, playing an instrument, painting, fashion design, standup comedy, cheer, magic, or something totally unexpected – we want to see it.

“If you’ve got a passion, this is your moment to share it.”

Voorhees resident and committee member Mary Elizabeth Horvitz – Gabby’s mother – encourages nervous first-timers not to hold back.

“Take a deep breath and go for it,” she advised. “Everyone involved – audiences, judges, fellow performers -wants to see you succeed. It’s not about being perfect, it’s about sharing something you love and being proud of yourself for trying.

“Often, the bravest performers are the most memorable.”

Past participants have gone on to regional stages, performing arts schools and even to recording original music. The audition panel this year will once again focus on variety, creativity and authenticity, rather than professional polish alone.

“We make a conscious effort to select a diverse lineup that represents the wide range of talents in our community,” Gabby Horvitz explained, adding that the show can also strengthen community bonds.

“There’s something magical about watching your neighbor, classmate or co-worker shine onstage,” she added. “It reminds us of the power of the arts to connect and uplift, and it turns audience members into fans, friends and supporters of one another.”

The final show date will be announced following auditions. Meanwhile, residents, local businesses and schools are encouraged to spread the word and get involved.

“By getting the word out, you can amplify the voices of singers, storytellers and artists who may not have had a platform before,” Horvitz pointed out. “It’s all about creating a vibrant space for creativity to flourish and for community members to come together in support.”

The Voorhees Arts Commission hopes to expand the talent program in the years ahead, envisioning workshops, partnerships and even a traveling showcase.

“Our long-term vision,” she said, “is to continue growing the event while keeping its heart – the celebration of local talent – front and center.”
