The Voorhees Art Commission welcomed community members for two recent engaging tote painting workshops led by local artist and teacher Kamal Khatiwala at the M Allan Vogelson Branch.

Participants of all skill levels were able to transform plain tote bags into unique, stylish accessories.

Khatiwala guided attendees step-by-step, helping them create custom pieces of fabric art inspired by Mandala designs—a practice he describes as both beautiful and therapeutic. No prior painting experience was required, and all supplies were provided, allowing participants to focus solely on enjoying the creative process.

“I chose Mandala for my fabric painting class because Mandala art can be beautiful and interesting, but it is also very therapeutic and can be useful for healing various mental conditions,” Khatiwala explained. The word “Mandala” comes from Sanskrit, meaning “circle.” The intricate geometric patterns encourage patience, focus, and relaxation, making the experience both meditative and fulfilling.

Khatiwala emphasized the importance of creative programs like this, especially in today’s uncertain world dominated by technology and social media.

“It is important that we stay grounded with originality through various art forms,” he said.

For those who felt uncertain about their artistic abilities, Khatiwala encouragement made a difference.

“I tell participants who think they can’t draw or paint to just follow the steps and have fun,” he said. “I make it easy for everyone to follow. Remember, as Bob Ross said, ‘there are no mistakes, only happy accidents.'”

Art, Khatiwala shared, is not just a passion but a path to personal growth and community connection.

“Teaching art has become part of my journey toward becoming not just a better artist but also a better human being,” he said. “Offering my time to teach and volunteer has made me humble and given me a sense of fulfillment.”

Both tote painting classes were warmly received by participants who left with beautifully personalized bags and a renewed sense of creativity and calm.

For those interested in future workshops and art events, the Voorhees Art Commission encourages residents to stay connected and take advantage of these opportunities to express themselves and engage with the local arts community.

Khatiwala offers the tote painting class once a month on the third Thursday of the month from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Voorhees library.
