The Voorhees Art Commission invites residents to experience a Disney theme during its upcoming candlelight concert at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 9, at Lions Lake Community Center.
The event is part of the township’s popular candlelight concert series, a tradition that began as a small, intimate gathering and has since grown into one of Voorhees’ most anticipated arts events. Surrounded by flickering candles, the audience will hear live performances of Disney’s most iconic songs by South Garden Strings, a quartet of musicians from the South Jersey Pops Orchestra.
“This year, we wanted to bring something truly joyful and nostalgic to our community,” said Gabrielle Horvitz, advisor to the Voorhees Art Commission. “Disney music connects generations: parents, children, and grandparents all know these melodies by heart.
“After a few years of performing classical and cinematic themes, we felt it was time to create a night that feels magical and uplifting for families and Disney lovers alike.”
Horvitz explained that the concert series was designed to “celebrate live music in a unique and serene setting,” giving audiences a chance to simply listen and feel.
“The response was overwhelming,” she added of the series. “Over time, it’s become a beloved tradition that our community looks forward to every year.”
Jaress Loo, first violinist in South Garden Strings, said the candlelight experience transforms the way audiences connect with music.
“Without the harshness of stage lights or distractions, you’re surrounded by a soft golden glow that lets the music take center stage,” he noted. “It’s immersive, emotional, and deeply calming – almost like time slows down for an hour.”
The concert program, curated by violinist and conductor Rob Bradshaw, will showcase Disney’s musical diversity, from classic animated favorites to modern cinematic works.
“We wanted to pay tribute to the different avenues of Disney’s creativity, film, theme parks and more,” Horvitz pointed out. “It’s a journey through the sounds that have shaped so many childhoods.”
Performers from South Jersey Pops also include Barbara Martin on viola and Talar Kaloustian on cello. Their arrangements are said to blend classical precision with storytelling.
Horvitz said she wants concert-goers to leave feeling inspired and reconnected.
“Especially in today’s busy world, we all need reminders of magic and joy,” she observed. “This concert is exactly that, a celebration of art, music and imagination that leaves your heart glowing just as much as the candles.”
