The Gloucester City High School girls’ wrestling team is having a great season and is now ranked as the fifth best team in all of New Jersey, including all groups and both public and parochial schools, longtime educator Joe Gorman said.

“The Lady Lions are the top rated girls wrestling team in South Jersey in just the second year of Gloucester High having a girls program. Everyone always says that Gloucester girls are tough but the 5th best team in the state in just our second year! So many smart, tough kids and a group of great coaches,” Gorman said, adding that women’s wrestling was approved last week as an official NCAA sport at all Division 1, 2 and 3 colleges and universities.

There were plenty of heroes for the Lady Lions, who received huge wins from Naomi Walker, Kloi Tighe, Maddie Boyd, Cat Santiago, Gabbie Maldanado and Lauren Parry. Shout out to Alexis Nelson, who battled in a tough 3-2 loss by saving the team three points by taking a two time state placer, helping Gloucester win the match. “These great young student athletes are tough. Couldn’t be prouder of these kids! Great going!” Gorman said.

Jake Smith played well at both sides of the court, threw down a monster dunk, scored 21 points and had 13 rebounds. Ryan James’ defense fueled the Lions offense with a series of key steals and Kadon Harris was athletic and tough, as usual.
