The library’s course is open to students in middle and high school and puts them in the mindset for beginning a new school year.

As the new school year quickly approaches, the library will host a study skills refresher class on Thursday, Aug. 28, from 3 to 4 p.m.

The program is intended for students in grades six through 12 and will help puts them in a school-ready mindset. Deptford schools reopen this fall on Tuesday, Sept. 2.

The session will be instructed by the library’s interim director, Michelle Burns, a former high-school English teacher.

“I was an English teacher for many years before joining the library, and I know how the summer slide can negatively affect students,” she said, referencing the loss of skills that can happen when kids are out of school for the summer. “This class is designed to help kids get back into school mode in their thinking.”

Burns’ session will cover ways to keep a student’s locker and folder organized for easy access and how to maintain an organized school calendar, and will offer multiple ways of studying so students can find the method that best works for them.

“Students who attend the class will also take a learning styles quiz that may help explain how each person learns, and then I’ll offer specific study methods for each learning style,” Burns explained. “In my experience, teachers often don’t have time to teach study methods.

“They are concentrating on the curriculum and content of the course, so kids who want to learn and do well and get good grades might really not know how to get there.”

The refresher class is free and does not require advance registration.

“One of the biggest things teachers struggle with in September is getting kids back into a school mindset from their summer vacations,” Burns noted. “I thought I might help out a little by having a study skills class at the library. Hopefully, the kids who take this class will be ready to jump start their school year and hit the ground running.”
