David C. Wood Mansion House, 821 Columbia Ave., Millville. 1–4 p.m. Join the Millville Historical Society as it celebrates Women’s History Month on International Women’s Day with two presentations.
The first part of the program will be presented by Deborah Boerner Ein, author of Mary Treat: A Biography. Treat contributed to the fields of ecology and botany and was a correspondent of Charles Darwin. Ein grew up in the pinelands of southern New Jersey and attended Rutgers University, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry and Natural Resource Management. Ein is currently the editor of SNJ Today and enjoys sharing Mary Treat’s relatively unrecognized story with others.
Next, Carol Spacht, an actor from the American Historical Theatre in Philadelphia, will perform as botanist and limnologist Dr. Ruth Patrick, who “broke through the gender barrier of the early 20th century to become a pioneer environmentalist in the area of freshwater ecology. Her alma mater was the University of Virginia. Dr. Patrick proved that a balanced ecosystem in a river depends upon biological diversity. Her work on water quality and pollution made her an advisor to five Presidents of the United States and a recipient of the National Medal of Science. Her love of the natural world continues to influence new generations of scientists.” (American Historical Theatre)
