The Gloucester Township Police Department has joined law-enforcement agencies across the country in the national “Click It or Ticket” campaign, an initiative focused on encouraging seat belt use through increased enforcement and public education.

Continuing through Sunday, the annual mobilization combines high-visibility seat belt checkpoints, saturation patrols and targeted outreach.

“Between now and June 1, Gloucester Township police will be participating in the national ‘Click It or Ticket’ campaign,” said traffic safety officer Len Castiello. “We urge all of our motorists to utilize seat belts to reduce fatalities in motor-vehicle accidents.

“Our officers will be patrolling the streets to make sure you click it – or you may get a ticket.”

Officers will focus enforcement on areas of the township with a higher incidence of crashes involving unrestrained occupants. In addition to roadway enforcement, the department’s traffic safety unit will visit local high schools, delivering presentations to seniors on the dangers of driving while intoxicated and the critical role of seat belts, especially as prom season approaches.

The campaign highlights three main reasons for consistent seat belt use: increased survival rates, legal obligation and reduced risk of serious injury.

The “Click It or Ticket” campaign is part of a larger national effort led by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to increase seat belt usage across all demographics, especially young drivers and passengers.

“We remind you to ‘Click It or Ticket,’” Castiello added. “Thank you, and drive safely.”
