A targeted bait package operation conducted by Gloucester Township police last month led to the arrest of a 59-year-old man as the department attempted to address concerns about package thefts during the holiday season.
According to police, officers strategically deployed a bait package – a package with an electronic monitor to track when it is stolen – at a residential address within the township. It was equipped with advanced GPS tracking technology and remained under continuous law-enforcement surveillance.
The package was reported stolen from an Erial residence at about 2:20 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. Officers monitored its movement in real time using the GPS software and coordinated a response that allowed them to safely conduct a motor vehicle stop.
As a result, police recovered the stolen package and took Sicklerville resident Brian Pope into custody without incident. He was charged with fourth-degree theft of movable property and was later released on a criminal summons in accordance with state bail guidelines. The investigation remains ongoing.
The police department is reminding residents to remain vigilant and to promptly report any suspicious behavior in their neighborhoods.
“Residents can take preventative steps to protect their deliveries,” notes a police statement, which recommended prompt package retrieval, use of package tracking services, and selection of secure delivery locations when possible.
