The blaze – which began at approximately 4:30 p.m. – caused the immediate evacuation of the home’s lone occupant. No injuries were reported, and the resident was not displaced.

Fire crews from the Chews Landing, Blackwood and Pine Hill quickly brought the blaze under control. Additional support was provided by Inspira BLS and the Gloucester Township Office of Emergency Management. The incident is currently under investigation by the Chews Landing department’s marshall but is not believed to be suspicious.

This blaze was an important reminder for residents to prioritize fire safety in the home by taking the following precautions:

  • Check smoke alarms regularly: Ensure they are operational and test them monthly. Replace batteries at least once a year.
  • Install fire suppression systems: Consider equipping your home with fire extinguishers and sprinkler systems.
  • Maintain appliances: Regularly inspect and maintain washing machines, dryers, and heaters to prevent malfunctions that could lead to fires.
  • Develop an escape plan: Have a plan in place and practice it with all members of the household. Know at least two exits from each room.
  • Stay vigilant: Never leave cooking unattended, and be cautious when using space heaters or candles.
